Podium Systems registered Police complaint under Information Technology Act in May, when they discovered that codes of vouchers purchased by the company for its first product, the Review DeDe app, had been used illegally.
The cyber-crime cell at Pune, after investigating for weeks, registered an FIR at local police station. The Vivek Rajole, the accused has been booked under sections 66 / 66D of the Information Technology Act and varius sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) including section 420 for cheating and 380 for theft.
The movie review mobile app ‘Review Dede’ was launched by the Company in April 2017 & had gained huge popularity and to gain more ground, they made arrangements with other brands like Carnival Cinemas, PVR Cinemas and Shoppers Stop, so that users could be rewarded better. For every review, a user was awarded a gift voucher which could be used a designated stores. The hacked got access to over 2 lakhs vouchers uploaded on the APP but by the time the Company could detect any theft/misdeed on their servers, the hacker had already utilized e-vouchers worth Rs 10,000. As a result, Podium Systems contacted its partners and prevented use of remaining e-codes.
The matter sounds similar to an FIR registered earlier in the year at South Delhi (Hauz Khas) Police Station, which was referred as Digital Shoplifting and four arrests were made in that matter. Anyway, in the current matter, the hacker was also able to access the company’s SMS system and the hacker was able to sent out messages anywhere in the name of the Mobile App / Company, though Customer Database was secured. The system was hcked on 08 May 2017, whulethe company could discover the same only on 10 May 2017. And the formal complant was logded with Cyber Crime cell on 22 May 2017 only. The Police has been able to track down the IP adress of the hacker, which has been traced it back to Karnataka and soon arrest will be made, as per Police Statement.
